Juan Martin del Potro was dealt another cruel injury setback when he suffered a kneecap fracture at the Shanghai Masters, resulting in a disappointing manner to finish his season.
The giant Argentinean had qualified for the season-ending ATP Finals for the first time since 2013 but injury - something that has plagued his career - saw him miss out on appearing at London's O2 Arena.
Since his Australian Open third round exit at the start of the year, his consistency at the Grand Slams has been a hallmark of why he has established himself once again in the world's top 10.
After suffering defeats to Rafael Nadal at the French Open and Wimbledon, Del Potro gained a measure of revenge with victory over the Spaniard to reach the US Open final only to be beaten by Novak Djokovic.
His most memorable success of 2018 came at Indian Wells as he ended Roger Federer's 17-match unbeaten run to win his maiden Masters 1000 title.
