Based in the San Francisco Bay area, the Raiders have been based in Oakland since 1995 and enjoy one of the most extensive fan bases in the NFL. Their relocation to Los Angeles in 1982 caused quite the stir and resulted in an even more passionate set of regional fans when they returned to the Bay Area in the mid-1990s.
Four championship titles, including one in 1963 before the AFL-NFL merger and three Super Bowls, are the highlights of the team's 57-year history.
Seven play-off appearances in the 1970s, five in the 1980s and six between 1990 and 2002 have proved to be the most successful periods in the team's history, but they have now gone without a Super Bowl win for an agonising 33 years.
Their last was a thumping 38-9 victory over Washington Redskins in 1983 in Tampa, Florida during the stint in Los Angeles when Tom Flores was in charge, who had also won it in Oakland three years earlier..
The Raiders finally ended a lengthy post-season drought in 2016 by clinching a playoff berth after a resurgent season in the AFC West. As coach Jack Del Rio looks to lead Oakland to the top of the game once again, quarterback Derek Carr has thrown 53 touchdown passes in his two seasons and the Raiders have had seven Pro Bowlers announced by the NFL for the 2016/17 season, making them one of the hottest prospects in the league right now.
