Playing out of Florida in the NFC South, they have the kind of young talent that is capable of great things, but a series of poor coaching performances in recent years have left fans frustrated and disillusioned with the franchise.
Off the field, Tampa Bay share owners with Manchester United. The Glazer family announced it was purchasing the English club in September 2003, just eight months after the Bucs had won their first Super Bowl.
The 2003 championship game against Oakland Raiders, which was dubbed 'Pirate Bowl' in reference to their closely related names, is the highlight of a history of ups and downs for the Bucs.
They have endured long post-season droughts either side of it, aside from during the tenures of Tony Dungy and Super Bowl-winning Jon Gruden, in which they appeared in the playoffs seven times and won four division titles - the most in any decade.
Dungy had revived them from a 14-year streak of losing seasons by orchestrating a divisional round playoff appearance against Green Bay Packers in 1997, but he was sacked in 2001 after failing to progress from the Wild Card round that year. Remarkably, he took Tampa Bay to the playoffs four times in his six seasons, but it wasn't enough for the football-crazy state of Florida nor the front office at the Raymond James Stadium.
The franchise installed its offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter, as its head coach for the 2016 season and immediately overturned a five-year streak of losing years.
With the likes of promising, 4,000-yard- plus quarterback, Jameis Winston, on the current roster, their prospects look bright.
The days of legendary linebacker and Hall-of- Famer Derrick Brooks might be behind them, but the Bucs can do nothing but look to the future for regular post-season appearances and another serious challenge for the Super Bowl -Winston is crucial to that.
